How to Pick Up a Girl at the Gym and Find Internet Fame Overnight

leave a comment »

Sunday October 21st was just another day in the life a couple of guys who were looking to get a piece of the showbiz pie. We had an idea of what we wanted to shoot, but like any other shoot we ended up throwing the script out the window when we got there. An hour later we produced a clip that made us laugh. We uploaded the clip, hoped for the best, but forgot about it.

Monday morning at 73oam my phone would not stop ringing.  A friend mentioned we had made the front page of Reddit and were rising quickly.  So quickly that we hit viral status in 22 hours. Two days in we hit 2.5 million views. Three days in we hit 10 million and our view counter broke.

Wow.

There is so much to share about this experience, but Jarrett and I and trying to prep for a number of shoots this week. We are also having to dot our I’s and cross our T’s in regards to  everything that comes along with sudden and unexpected internet fame.

Updates soon.

Oral Traditions: Story tellers at the LA Connection II – Near Death Experiences

Oral Traditions: Storytellers at the LA Connection II - Near-Death Experiences

Time to get as close to death as possible (via a third party)

We’rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre baaaaaaaaaaaaaaack! The LA Connection (13442 Ventura Blvd. Sherman Oaks, CA 91423) has invited us back to perform another night of story telling August 25th at 7p.

The show’s theme will be . . . Near Death Experiences.

At the risk of tipping my hand too much I promise there will be car accidents, drownings, armed robberies, and probably at least one OD.

I will tackle hosting duties for the night with stories by Dallas James, Stevie Mack, Jarrett Sleeper, Ryan Kolbe, Robert Mitchell, and Danny Gonzalez. *Card subject to change without notice *

Tickets will be $5 door – red tickets will be accepted for this special event. *** Due to the selected theme, there is a good chance the material may skew a little blue, so keep the kids at home and be prepared for some jaw-dropping stories.

“Oral Traditions: Storytellers at the LA Connection” is an (almost) monthly show where comics tell true stories that they normally wouldn’t dare to tell in public. There is a good chance even their close friends don’t know the whole story. It will be honest, brutal, and probably funny.

MyMusic Live! with Phoenyx

MyMusic Live with Joe Hanson, Adam Acuragi, and Phoenyx

Check out Phoenyx doing their improv hair metal (acoustically) on MyMusic Live from last week.  The action gets going at about 11 minutes in but you can click on the annotations at the top of the clip to go straight to the two performance pieces. We took a web-based audience suggestion for both performances and even had their host Metal perform with us during the second one.

We asked the audience for both their second favorite day of the week and their favorite spicy food.  We chose “Wednesday Jalepenos” and Gunner and Chopper hit it out of the park.  Next we rolled the dice more than ever by having Metal improvise a song with us “5th Grade-Style”.  It had been years since Metal had been a part of our lives, but he clearly hadn’t missed a beat.

10 minutes and 11,000 comments later we were done and pleased to show a new audience our improv hair metal style.

Big ups to the Fine Brothers and the entire crew for putting up with the sequins and spandex that is Phoenyx.  You’re never sure how your ridiculousness will play with people who don’t know about improv (acoustic) hair metal, but they certainly embraced it.

Give us a thumbs up on Youtube, comment, and/repost!  Also a photo gallery is listed below that captured some the backstage shinanigans.

Hitler and Eva Can’t Sleep – STF Public Access 1.30

leave a comment »

Sometimes I don’t know how our cameras get positioned where they do. And sometimes I only know how to end sentences in prepositions. But I do know a good Hitler joke when I see one.

The STF Public Access camera’s made their way into Hitler and Eva’s bedroom only to catch them fighting a bout of insomnia.  Hitler tells Eva a bedtime story that consists of Kim Kardashian’s engagement ring, the nature of the NASCAR economy, and a tale of what happens when Starbucks runs out of coffee.

Did you know that Hitler sleeps with a German flag? I didn’t.

Live Show update

I’ll be at my resident gig with The Stranger than Fiction Show tonight at the LA Connection at 9pm.  Word has it that Dallas James is back from his break and has been stockpiling comedy from across this great land. Me, I’m trying to get it out of me before I go camping next weekend. Tickets are still available for tonight’s show and I promise to incorporate more mid 90’s basketball stars into my opening.  Who doesn’t love a good Horace Grant reference, right?

Red Bull Soap Box 2011 – Los Angeles Re-cap

leave a comment »

Talk about an amazing experience. The Red Bull Soap Box Race was perhaps one of the most exciting events I’ve even had the honor of participating in.  When Paul Pearson (builder/driver) asked me to be a part of his team, I didn’t know what I was getting into.  I was familiar with the event but I couldn’t quite wrap my head around the concept of 110,000 people, thousands of pictures, and countless interviews.  That day I had my picture taken more in 12 hours than I had in the first 32 years of my life combined. I can’t say enough good things about the event, but I can tell you that Red Bull knows how to throw an event. From beginning to end these guys knew what to do.

There were some truly amazing teams out there. Hellado on wheels was great, the Luchadores were incredible, but my favorite had to be Jurassic Park. These guys had it all.  Best opening sketch, great race, ridiculous crash, and an incredible post-crash finish.  The Hamster Rampage had a similar philosophy to our teams. No testing, no suspension – just crash and go.

Pit row was an interesting experience when it came down to judging. Psycho Mike Catherwood stopped by and was clearly a fan of our LA political inside joke, but I had a feeling his collective man crush on the Baked Muscles would demolish us.

One of my favorite comedians Adam Carolla also had a car in the race. I didn’t get a chance to meet the Aceman, but he had a pretty spectacular crash as well.

We’re already making plans for next years Flugtag and the following year’s soap box race. I’m thinking a battleship and some seamen. Read into it all you’d like.

Paul Pearson rounding the turn after his amazing crash

Before the race, Paul mentioned that he was a little nervous since the safety co-coordinator had him remove his 6 point racing harness.  You know . . . for safety. Well, after he passed the first chicane and made it over the first jump, we all understood his concern. After his digger into the hay bails and a quick standing 8 count (Race Official: “Who are you and why are you here?” Paul: “I’m Paul and I’m here to race.”), he was back in it. Check the video at the end of the post for the spectacular crash.  We’re thinking he’s gonna make the video this year.

My girlfriend making fun of little Mexican girls. “You’ll never be tall, red, and rich! Hahahaha!” So messed up . . .

Christine and Dallas following Paul down the course

Dallas James: “I hear they have pudding at the bottom of the course.”

Christine: “Yeaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh! Puddddddddddiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnggg! Wooooooooooo!!!”

2011: Red Bull Soap box Derby

leave a comment »

It is with great pleasure that I announce that I’ll be participating in the Red Bull Soapbox Derby with The City of Bell Pickpockets.

The car is already in full swing and I’m producing the opening sketch/musical number.  Music and theme have been selected and team leader/driver Paul Pearson’s racer is gonna rip.  The plan is to set the speed record this year so I’ve got my work cut out for me not only in producing but also in the gym so we can get that giant sled of his flying down the hill.

Here are some behind the scene pictures of the work in progress.

The prototype

The workshop

Paul Pearson: The work shop

Bare bones

“City of Bell Pickpockets has hired a top notch Hollywood producer to choreograph the script!!!!!!”

This quote from the City of Bell Pickpockets graced their facebook page after I signed on.  I try not to believe my own bullshit, but I don’t mind believing other people’s.  Updates to follow.

The Event

The Red Bull Soap Box race will take place this year on May 21st on historic Grand Ave. and with the finish line at Pershing square. It’s a human-powered race of epic proportions where we’re judged on three criteria: Speed, creativity, and showmanship.  There will be crashes and dances and plenty of wacky antics due to the fact that I’ll have waaaaaaayyyyy too much taurine and caffeine running through my system.

Live Show update:

I’ll at the LA Connection on Friday night for my regular gig with The Stranger than Fiction Show – This week’s special guests have rumored to be everyone’s mom . . . Well maybe my mom . . . if we could re-animate her . . . and have Chad play her on stage.  It’s clearly a developing story.

The other big news involves my friends over at Red Bull . . . but we’ll just have to leave it at that.  * You see kid, that’s what we in ‘the business’ call a teaser!*

More info tomorrow!
